How Does CBD Work for Dogs?

CBD or cannabidiol is a non-psychoactive chemical found in the cannabis plant. CBD is the component of cannabis that does not produce a “high” unlike THC which does produce a high and is not appropriate for dogs.

CBD is thought to help relieve a range of ailments, particularly pain. Hemp is cannabis with a THC content that is less that .3%.  CBD works on the CBD receptor system or cannabinoid system in both people and animals.  This complex receptor system is vast which is why the vast array of benefits of using CBD are achieved.

When the endocannabinoid system is in balance the the body is at homeostasis which in turn supports many body issues and functions.

CBD a New Possibility for Treating Arthritis in

CBD is a major compound found in cannabis sativa or hemp. Studies have demonstrated that CBD activates the CB2 receptor in the immune system of dogs. That activates interleukin 6 (IL-6) which is an inflammatory mediator that can stimulate pain signals from the nervous system.

There is a big difference between between THC and CBD

CBD from cannabis sativa or hemp has been used for pain and anxiety relief for years in humans but this research is just beginning in dogs.

Researchers from Baylor College of Medicine conducted a double-blind, placebo-controlled study. The 4 week study included 20 large dogs diagnosed with osteoarthritis who were randomly assigned to receive either a placebo or one of three different CBD options. The dogs were evaluated before and after the regimen by both veterinarians and their owners on factors related to their mobility and pain.

While the placebo group and the low CBD group showed no improvement, by the end of the one month period, the group of dogs who took higher doses of CBD or used CBD in a liposomal formulation, like our Relieve – Plus, saw significant improvement in their mobility and quality of life

The Anti-Anxiety Effects of CBD for Dogs

Many dogs are anxiously reactive to stimuli such as loud noises or sudden movements.

These dogs spend a lot of time panting, pacing and visibly uncomfortable. CBD makes these dogs feel at ease and less anxious while reducing the effects of anxiety on their respiratory system and heart rate.

CBD makes dogs feel less anxious which reduces the amount of time they spend panting, pacing and visibly uncomfortable.

A study led by Rebecca Rosin, clinical professor of neurology and director of the Veterinary Pain Clinic at Georgetown University’s Center for Integrative Medicine found that CBD from cannabis hemp had a calming effect on dogs without any harmful side effects.
