K9 Veterans Day approaches on March 13th. In the United States, there are over 2,300 active duty military dogs and more than 600 dogs deployed overseas. These dogs are trained by the Department of Defense to work with their handlers in a variety of situations, including combat zones, where they provide valuable support to their human counterparts.
In addition, according to the VA, over 4,000 veterans are currently using service dogs to help manage conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury (TBI), and mobility impairments.
To honor their service and sacrifice, we are highlighting 5 charities dedicated to improving the lives of K9 veterans and their handlers. But first let’s understand a little more about K9s and our military.
What is K9 Veterans Day?
K9 Veterans Day is a day to honor and commemorate the service and sacrifices of military and working dogs who have served in various capacities alongside their human handlers in the armed forces. It is observed on March 13th every year.
K9 Veterans Day was first observed in 1942, when the US Army began training dogs for use in World War II. The day serves as a reminder of the important role that dogs have played and continue to play in the military, as well as to recognize the bravery, loyalty, and dedication of these remarkable animals. It is also an opportunity to show appreciation to their handlers, trainers, and caregivers who work tirelessly to ensure their well-being.
How K9 Veterans Serve in the Military
Canine units in the military are specialized units that use trained dogs for a variety of tasks, including combat, detection, and search and rescue. These units are found in many branches of the military, including the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard.
The most common types of canine units in the military:
- Explosive detection dogs: These dogs are trained to detect explosive materials and are used to search for explosives in areas such as airports, military installations, and other high-security locations.
- Patrol dogs: These dogs are trained to work with military police and can be used to search for suspects, conduct patrols, and provide security.
- Search and rescue dogs: These dogs are trained to locate missing persons, including service members who are lost in combat situations or in other dangerous environments or perished.
- Special operations dogs: These dogs are used by special forces units and are trained for a variety of tasks, including tracking, detecting explosives, and conducting raids.
- Combat tracking dogs: These dogs are used to track enemy forces in combat situations and can be trained to locate explosives, weapons, and other materials.
Most canine military support involves the intricate use of canine scent detection but ultimately they are highly trained, incredibly loyal and intricate to supporting troops at home and abroad. Overall, canine units play a vital role in many military operations and our military is better off with their support.
5 K9 Veteran Charities Helping Canine Veterans and Helping Dogs Support Veterans
American Humane – American Humane is a nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring the welfare and safety of animals. Their military program, which includes the K9 Battle Buddies program, provides critical care and support to K9 veterans and their handlers. A tax-deductible donation to American Humane helps rescue animals in floods, hurricanes and other disasters, reunite our brave retired military dogs with their handlers, provide those K-9 heroes with the lifelong healthcare they deserve and support other American Humane’s life-saving and impactful programs. K9s For Warriors – K9s For Warriors is a nonprofit organization that provides service dogs to military veterans suffering from PTSD, traumatic brain injury, and other conditions. Their program not only helps the veterans but also rescues dogs from shelters and gives them a new purpose. A gift to K9s for warriors goes right to work to help pair a struggling Warrior with a shelter dog trained to help veterans with post-traumatic stress, traumatic brain injury and/or military sexual trauma. A donation saves two lives with one act of kindness.
Warrior Canine Connection – Warrior Canine Connection is a nonprofit organization that trains service dogs to assist veterans with physical and emotional disabilities. They also provide therapeutic programs that allow veterans to work with the dogs in training, promoting healing and bonding. Warrior Canine offers several ways to get involved from being a puppy parent, making donations and holding a community event.
Mission K9 Rescue – Mission K9 Rescue is a nonprofit organization dedicated to Rescuing, Reuniting, Re-Homing, Rehabilitating and Repairing any retired military and contract working dogs that has served mankind in some capacity. They provide medical care, training, and adoption services to ensure that these heroic dogs are well cared for in their retirement. Mission K9 rehabilitates dogs first as many working dogs have been in situations that have caused them stress and anxiety, second they make attempts to reunite them with their former handlers and after that adopt with care.
Semper K9 – Semper K9 is a nonprofit organization that provides service dogs to wounded, critically ill, and injured veterans. Their program not only helps the veterans but also rescues dogs from shelters and gives them a new purpose along with family integration programs for service dogs and service dog awareness. Semper K9 started by Christopher Baity and his wife after several deployments working as a dog handler in the military the last being Baity a Contract Explosive Detector Dog Handler with RONCO Corporation as part of Afghanistan Central Command. Semper K9 offers many ways to give including donations, memorials and more.
